LETTER FORM NANCY CARR, VAPA, CDE
REGARDING EDUCATION INFORMATION PACKETS AND STATE AND ASSEMBLY BILLS REGARDING FUNDING FOR CALIFORNIA VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS
Hello Arts Educators,
The 2006-2007 school year is a historic one for arts education. The state budget includes two funding streams for arts education; $105 million for arts education (SB 1811) and $500 million for physical education and arts education (SB 1802).
Realizing that there are opportunities to take a new look at art education programs in our state’s school districts, the professional organizations of dance, music, theatre, visual arts and physical education have been working in collaboration to develop informational packets for school districts and schools. They worked in partnership with the two subject matter projects for the arts and for physical education, representatives from UC and CSU and CDE’s physical education and arts education consultants. The goal of this collaborative effort was to provide information regarding strategic recommendations for maximizing opportunities in support of sequential standards-based instruction in arts education and physical education. In support of such instruction, each organization tapped master teachers to provide commonly used supplies and equipment and to provide introductory statements on a number of issues that surround that instruction. Attached with this email you find a number of attachments speaking to the above noted items. It will be appreciated that you post them to your website for use by teachers, schools and districts as they annually work to further develop their arts education programs.
SEE LIST OF ATTACHMENTS BELOW
In this packet of items is the text of AB 1802 ($105M) and AB1811 ($500M). There are possible trailer bills that may be attached. Should there be trailer bills, we then will wait for the Governor’s signature before the California Department of Education notifies the districts of guidelines regarding the two funding sources. Once the final language is known, a new page will be sent to replace the text of the $105M and $500M page and bring that information current. Please register for funding availability notification on the “Funding” site of the California Department of Education’ home page. The Visual and Performing Arts and Physical Education consultants will work to provide guidance, once the funding specifications have been established. Please watch the California Alliance for Arts Education’s (CAAE) website for the latest information regarding both bills.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have questions.
