Co-President’s Message: CADN
Nancy Ng and Shana Habel

As fellow CDEA members we would like to share with you a great resource for dance educators throughout the state. CDEA is one of the partners of the California Dance Network, an online resource for dancers, companies and teacher. The purpose of the CADN website is to strengthen, connect, unify and promote our state’s thriving dance field.
The website empowers the California dance community by gathering census data about the dance field (which is vital toward our efforts for a dance teaching credential), compiling state-wide and national news about dance, and providing online tools to promote dance events and activities.
It is vital that you your dance voice be counted and heard. You can easily create a dance profile. Just click on the link below. As of 9/15/08 there were 203 dancers, 148 companies, 163 teachers and 152 events posted. Let’s work together to double those numbers in the next couple of months!

Call for Nominations for NDEO Board of Directors for 2009
Deadline for Nominations: E-mail or postmark by October 16, 2008

NDEO seeks board members who inspire you for their knowledge of dance education, vision for NDEO and the field, leadership qualities, and advocacy of dance as art in education. Serving on the NDEO Board provides you with important opportunities to shape future directions in dance education at national and state levels in all environments in which dance is taught – PreK-12, post-secondary, private schools, performing arts organizations, and community centers.

Each NDEO Officer and Director has specialized job responsibilities, which promotes representation of a broad constituency in the governance, structure, and function of NDEO. Terms of office commence at national conference in New York City in June 2009.

Open positions for 2009:

Treasurer (3 year term, 2009 – 2012): The Treasurer is responsible to the NDEO Board of Directors for proper stewardship of the funds of the organization. The Treasurer serves with the President and Executive Director in determining the financial direction of NDEO, works with headquarters and NDEO accountants to maintain accurate reporting procedures and execute audits, and assists in writing and executing grants for the organization as appropriate.

Four (4) Board members to serve three (3) years (2009-2012) as Directors of:

Membership: The Director works closely with NDEO staff on membership recruitment, retention, and recapture of lapsed members. The Director works with the State Affiliate Representative on programs and services to support and build state and national membership.

Publication, Periodicals Resource Review: The Director is chair of the Publication Committee that makes recommendations and oversees the review process of resources (books, CDs, videos, etc.) considered by NDEO for publication or purchase. The publications committee assists in organizing the Book Signing event at conference.

Technology & Web: The Director works with NDEO headquarters on office technology needs, managing the NDEO forums, and web technology.

E-Communicator: the Director for the E-Communicator develops and maintains appropriate guidelines, receives submissions, insures that requirements are met, formats and sends the e-newsletter to membership every two weeks.

BoD Qualifications include membership in NDEO for a minimum of one year, five (5) years experience in the field of dance education, and documented evidence of leadership in dance education.

BoD Application Process: The nominator or nominee must submit a 350 word description to: (1) identify the position sought; (2) provide a brief biography referencing the qualifications the nominee brings to the position (experience, interest and leadership); and (3) provide complete contact information.

For more information: See Nominations Guidelines on the NDEO web at www.ndeo.org / who we are / governance; or contact Dale Schmid, Chair (dale.schmid@doe.state.nj.us), Patricia Cohen (patcohen1@optonline.net) or Executive Director, Jane Bonbright (jbonbright@ndeo.org).

Note: You are welcome to self-nominate. If you nominate another person, s/he must be informed and agree to become a candidate prior to submitting the application. Nominations do not guarantee a place on the slate. The slate will be determined by the Nominating Committee of NDEO.

Deadline: Nominations must be e-mailed or postmarked by October 16, 2008. Send to Dale Schmid, Chair (dale.schmid@doe.state.nj.us) or to the NDEO office c/o Executive Director Jane Bonbright, either by e-mail (jbonbright@ndeo.org) or mail (NDEO, 8609 Second Ave, #203B, Silver Spring, MD, 20910).
