PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

We’re well into the summer season which is traditionally the dancers’ season for workshops, conferences and renewal.  I had the great opportunity of attending the NDEO conference in New York City at the end of June, and was glad to take part in much needed renewal, and connect - and re-connect - with my California dance colleagues. We have a strong dance presence in California, and I look forward to working together more diligently as a professional body to deepen those connections that will strengthen us and enliven our work. You should have received an email from NDEO containing the NDEO Conference highlights and a message from our own Sue McGreevy-Nichols, 2009-2010 NDEO President. It really was a conference well worth attending. And it’s not too soon to begin thinking about the October 2010 conference to be held in Arizona. We made jokes at the conference about bringing a caravan from California, but why not? Start thinking now about what you can contribute to the conference. It would be great to have a strong contingent of California presenters as well as attendees.

I also want to let everyone know that in the past few days it has come to my attention that the position of VAPA Consultant at the California Department of Education is in danger of being cut.  It is a position that has existed for 23 years, and is vital to the work of arts education in the state. Nancy Carr has served diligently for many years as our VAPA Consultant and has been a true advocate for all arts educators statewide. Whether it was being available and always ready to answer our questions, disseminating information in a timely way, or being present at our CDEA Executive Board Meetings, she has been our voice at the top. It is important that we now take the time to advocate for the continuance of this position within the CDE, and to recognize and thank Nancy for all the fine work she has done to further arts education in our districts, counties and at the state level. In the EBlast you will find four email addresses for folks at the CDE. Please, please, please take the time – whether you are a dance educator in the public school system or not – to send a message to each of the individuals named below asking them to reconsider the fate of the position of VAPA Consultant at the state level. It’s a loss we can’t afford.

Lastly, I’d like to mention NDEO National Honor Society for Dance Arts. If you are not already familiar with it, please take a look on the NDEO website for more information. Currently, in California we have several chapters and hope to see more chapters bloom as the new school year begins. Avilee Goodwin, the dance muse and teacher at the East Oakland School for the Arts, has organized a chapter at her school and volunteered to be one of our state contacts for NHSDA. Because our state is so large, however, we need another dedicated dance educator to work with Avilee in coordinating the work of NHDSA within the state. If you are interested or have questions, please contact me at shana.habel@lausd.net.

Never doubt how important each of us are to work of dance and dance education. Thanks for all you do! Here’s to keeping dance important and alive! Enjoy the summer days!

Co-President

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ARTICLE FOR DANCE TEACHER MAGAZINE

Hello CDEA Members,

Hope this note finds you well! I'm researching sources for an article on K-12 dance professionals who have collaborated with private studios on recitals. I'd like to have the article work as a "how-to" on how both parties can benefit from such a partnership, but I don't know of anyone who has done this off hand.

More specifically, I'm looking for anyone who has pulled high school students to perform in a studio recital, or recruited high school teens to volunteer backstage at their show - this sort of thing. If anyone comes to mind, please feel free to give me a call or email.

Also, if I'm unclear, I can certainly elaborate. I hope to hear from the CDEA membership soon!

Thanks,
Tracy

"A Weave of Moving, Speaking & Writing"
We respond to our environment, both immediate, and broad and complex. Our bodies change tone, experience and act on kinesthetic impulses, while our minds wander and focus. The structures of body, of language, of feeling, interact. That's what we will explore.
Simone Forti is a dancer and writer in her seventies, enjoying maturity while urgently exploring new strategies.

August 8 & 9 - Taisha Paggett
"Everything Bodies"
This movement class will begin with floor and standing exercises based on connecting breath with movement, joint articulation, and tapping into both internal and external focus and awareness. Phrase work will be pulled from a current choreography project "everything," which plays with the task of physicalizing multiple sensations in a single moment.
We approach movement with an inquiring, non-judgmental mind, with the goal of finding new sensations of awareness in our individual physicality.
Taisha Paggett is a Los Angeles based dance artist and co-founder of the dance journal project, itch. Her work and collaborations for the stage, gallery, and public sphere have been presented and supported by several venues throughout California as well as in Chicago, New York City and
Utrecht, The Netherlands. She has worked extensively in the projects of Victoria Marks and David Rousseve, and is a member of the audio action collective, Ultra-Red. She holds an MFA from UCLA's Department of World Arts and Cultures.

SUSTAINABLE MOVEMENT 24/7
“Every step is a fall interrupted”
-- Timothy Kelly, from The Extremities

The body tells us when it needs our attention, but we often ignore its messages. Most symptoms involve misuse of the body, not only in the hour while we are "mindfully" exercising, but also in the other 23 hours of the day. Typically, when one part fails to give support, another part tightens to compensate; muscle tension will most likely release itself with some help from its neighbors.
If we move according to the logic of the body, we can move without incurring or aggravating pain or injury.
In this interactive program you will learn a nonverbal vocabulary of body movement that can be taken anywhere for self-correction. You will learn how the body works, and what to do and not to do when sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, reaching, twisting, or sleeping. You will learn how to prevent injury while learning new movement patterns. You will learn to listen to and respond to pain. In short, your relationship with your body will change. You will be in charge.
By the end of the program, each participant will develop an individualized regimen for daily self-care, based on their favorite movements from the program.  The program will be tailored to the needs of participants.
The classes will involve innovative movement designed to be fun, practical, and safe regardless of  age, condition, or experience.  Movement sequences will involve integrated muscle groups to simultaneously increase flexibility, strength, coordination, balance and endurance. Flexibility and strength do not enhance functioning without corresponding stability.

Date(s)/Time(s)/Locations:

Introductory Session (can be taken separately)Mon. Aug. 3  (7:00-9:00 pm)  in the Marisa Leif conference room on the 3rd floor of the 300 UCLA Medical Plaza Building.
This program is suitable for anyone. It will involve lecture, demonstration, audience volunteers, and whole group participation from seats in order to observe the ways in which we build tension and can release it.  This session is aimed at building body awareness through cognitive understanding.

Series of 3 follow up sessions (the introductory class is a prerequisite for this series unless permission is obtained from the instructor - eva@evamovement.com) – Wed.  Aug.  5 (7:30-9:30 pm), Mon. Aug. 10 (8:00-10:00 pm), Mon. Aug. 12 (7:30-9:30 pm) in the Dance Studio at the YWCA, 2019 14th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90405-1600. 310-452-3881.
This program is for those who have participated in the introductory class and want to acquire tools or techniques for simultaneous achievement of flexibility, strength, coordination, balance and endurance through integrated movement. This series is aimed at building mindful awareness through body movement.

Who should attend:

  • Anyone who wants to know more about their body; however, the program is not suited to individuals who are wheelchair bound.
  • Health care professionals or trainees who would like to develop skills in identifying and correcting body motion through demonstration, observation, and active participation.
  • Athletes and performing artists who wish to broaden awareness of core and other muscle function, expand range of motion, and enhance performance.

Exercises will be done seated, standing, and on the floor. Those  who are not able to get down to the floor will be given modified versions of the exercises, based on their physical ability.
If you are not sure whether or not the class is appropriate for you, please email Eva Nemeth, M.P.T. at eva@evamovement.com with your phone number and a good time to contact you.

Instructor: Eva Nemeth, M.P.T.: Eva was showcased in April 2008 at UCLA in a program entitled, "Healing Back and Neck Pain through Movement: A Demonstration of Seven Approaches," where she garnered a hearty round of cheers and applause for her lively and colorful 10-minute presentation. There were many requests for an extended follow up program.
Ms. Nemeth specializes in movement and exercise using a novel approach to physical rehabilitation based on the principles of dance and aesthetics. As a physical therapist and movement educator, she has devoted her life to finding creative methods of treating specific problems through assessing the whole body. She presents movement workshops locally and internationally and works with clients from ages 6 to 96, from professional athletes to actors.
As a child in Hungary, Ms. Nemeth was recruited into the national gymnastics school, and competed nationally and internationally through her school years. At age 19, she began studying and working with innovative movement teacher Eva Kovacs, a former modern dance pioneer in Europe who became her lifelong mentor. Subsequently, she taught techniques in modern dance and rhythmical gymnastics to hundreds of students annually.
The principles behind many of the most advanced physical therapy treatments in use today were advanced by modern dancers in Europe. Leading European hospitals and physical therapy schools now utilize these approaches, which Ms. Nemeth has integrated into her practice. In addition, Ms. Nemeth's skills as an educator are uniquely enhanced by years of study in mindfulness-based practices and psychology. Ms. Nemeth obtained graduate and postgraduate degrees at the Medical University in Physiotherapy in Budapest. In 1990, after relocating to California, she founded Marina Physical Therapy, which eventually grew to 13 employees.
